How Big Is Too Big: Projector Screen Size Questions

What size screen should you get for your projector? You can use our Screen Wizard tool to find out the size and type of screen that will best match your projector and your room setup. Getting the biggest screen you can fit in your home theater, while tempting, probably isn’t the best choice if you want to ensure good picture quality.

Keep in mind that for best picture viewing, you’ll want to be roughly twice as far from the screen as it is big. Screen size is given in diagonal measurements, so a 100 inch screen would be 100 inches from lower left corner to upper right corner. You would want to have your seating roughly 200 inches from the screen for optimum quality.

Another thing to consider is how bright the image will be when projected to fill the screen. The bigger the image size, the dimmer the picture because the light needs to be dispersed over a wider area. Check your projector specs to see how large of an image it can project while still maintaining the brightness you want. Upping the gain of the screen can compensate for some of that dimming effect, but higher gain screens can cause problems of their own, including hot-spotting.
