What we mean when we say “home movies” has changed drastically in the last decades, and so have the home movie screens we show them on. It wasn’t so long ago that home movies were jittery, washed-out scenarios of family vacations, babies’ birthdays and Christmas trees, enjoyed by the noisy flickering of the old projector. That projector, and the portable screen that went with it, were only hauled out on special occasions, and set up with a great deal of fuss for the audience jammed on the couch or standing against the walls.
How times have changed! Easy-to-use video cameras have made family films as ubiquitous as still photo albums. But what we used to call “home movies” are now just a tiny fraction of what we watch chez nous. Today we can watch wide-screen Hollywood epics or obscure foreign films in the comfort of our own family rooms, shortly after they’ve appeared in theaters. Children can have a library of their favorite movies just like their collection of storybooks. We can even learn how to do Pilates, tie an irresistible trout fly or whip up a chocolate mousse!
What we watch has changed, and what we watch them on has kept pace. Portable screens are still available (and we have two excellent styles at Screen Innovations), but most families now use their projector systems far too frequently to make that the best choice.
