Home Entertainment Screen Innovations Black Diamond II Review October 7, 2009 By David Birch-Jones
Leave the lights on
If you’re considering a front projection system for your home theater but don’t have a dedicated light-controlled environment to put it in, you may want to check out one of the new high-contrast screens like Screen Innovations Black Diamond II.
Using a special screen design, these screens minimize ambiant light while still giving you a bright and punchy projected image.

Traditional home theaters can be a lot of fun. Turn on the system, turn off the lights and start the movie.
Being in a dark room, in my opinion, is part of the movie experience. But I don’t like watching sports and other programming in a bat cave.
Now you don’t have to. SI recently launched their Black Diamond screens. With these screens you can use a front projector and still have some lights on. With a normal screen, if you turn up the lights, the picture is washed out and unwatchable.
SI’s Black Diamond screens, combined with projectors that are both rapidly improving and decreasing in price, is a game changer. You can have a huge, high quality picture in a cave… or in a room with lights, as shown below.
This was, in my opinion, the most impressive product at the CEDIA Expo last week. I’m planning to get my hands on an SI Black Diamond screen and give it a test drive. After I do, I’ll report back with more details.

Next-Generation High-Contrast Projection Screens – Do They Really Work?
One of the highlights of the annual CEDIA trade show, which caters to the custom installation home theater industry, is their exhibition and competition for the most deluxe and ornate home theater installations. Show attendees get to look at marvelously designed dedicated home theater rooms, some of which have price tags that run into the high six figures, with a select few costing even more.

No, your eyes haven’t deceived you (though after seeing the SI Black Diamond Screen in person, you may think they have). This is a review of a projection screen. Not a projector/screen combo, but just a screen. Why? Since becoming a front-projection video enthusiast some years ago, I have never encountered a product that has done more to bridge the gap between traditional flat-panel displays and front projection than the SI Black Diamond II Screen reviewed here. It is such an innovative and revolutionary product that, upon installing it in my own home, I had to give it the attention it deserves. What makes the SI Black Diamond II Screen so good, you ask? Read on and I’ll tell you.

“Screen Innovations has outdone themselves with this 1.4-gain model of the Black Diamond II”
In February, we looked at Screen Innovations’ Black Diamond II 0.8-gain ambient light screen shortly before it was released. Now, we’re back in the lab with their 1.4-gain version of the same screen. This ambient light rejection (or “black”) screen solves the brightness problem of the last model. It also expands the viewing angle, which frees up some of the restrictions and makes the screen easier to use. At $2699, it is priced like a high-end boutique product, but it delivers performance in line with its cost.

Anthem LTX-500 LCoS Projector and SI Black Diamond II Screen Review
Introduction
Flagship Home Theater. The very words evoke the highest quality in audio and video reproduction. Anthem, a well-established maker of high end audio products has just released their first display, the THX-certified LTX-500 LCoS Projector. Like their audio gear, Anthem is marketing this unit as a reference quality piece. In their own words, “A full HD 1920×1080 “˜Reference’ point of view”… brings the scale and excitement of the Cinema experience home.” Have they achieved their goal? Boy did I ever have fun finding out!
AVguide – Black Diamond Projection Screen Review
Just five years old, Austin, Texas-based Screen Innovations recently introduced its latest high-contrast screen model, the Black Diamond. Manufactured in its Austin facility, the screen features multiple layers of laminated optical material on a flexible background that permits the screen to be rolled up into a tube for easy shipment. The frame consists of two horizontal and two vertical components that are easily assembled in much the same fashion as a standard metal picture frame. Flexible vinyl “wings” are attached to the screen material, and these are pressed into slot channels with plastic bars on all sides. It only took me about a half-hour from start to finish to put it all together, and when it was all done, the screen material itself was suitably flat and properly tensioned.
JVC Projectors – Black Diamond Screen Helps Projector Sales
I am really glad that I finally had the chance to talk to you. I believe that you and I can help each other a great deal. Your BD screen material is going to make us sell more projectors. The more people I can make understand how amazing that screen really is for its specific application, the more solutions will be sold with our new HD350 and your screen.
I am telling you at least 40% of all calls I receive about the projector is about what screen to use and or how to make the projector work with 2.35.
If you can provide me with some small samples 8.5″ x11″ or so of the BD 0.8 & 1.4 and one solar HD 1.3 white.
These samples will be a great tool for all my demos so I can grab the samples and show the difference right then and there during my trainings.
Thank you, Daniel Nilsson
Customer (End User)
Thank you and the SI team, It took about a hour and a half to assemble and install the “Black Diamond 1.4″, I then fired up the projector and Daaaamn! The picture just leaps off the wall like a huge Plasma Display. Until now I thought there was no way to enjoy Movies, Sports & TV in my ManCave with the lights even half up. See for yourself I enclosed before and after pics for you to check out. I’ll tell you indoor, outdoor, light or dark that screen is Bang’n.
It’s Truly Universal.

How do you rate the Black Diamond?
I would definitely rate this as an A-plus product compared with what is currently available on the market. The combination of performance and price point really hit a sweet spot in the market and set a new standard for screens.
