Nano: Fabric Roll Over & Hem Bar Jam Troubleshooting – Indoor Shades

What Is Fabric Roll Over? #

Fabric roll over happens when the shade material rolls unevenly, often walking to one side or bunching. This can cause:

• Telescoping: fabric tracks left or right instead of rolling straight

• Wrinkles or creases in the fabric

• The hem bar gets stuck inside the cassette

• The fabric wraps back up the roller in reverse

Common Causes #

• Unlevel brackets

• Fabric rolled off-center during service or factory error

• Debris or bugs rolled into the fabric

• Lightweight or bent hem bar

• Tube deflection on wider shades

• Shade operated while unmounted

Reminder: All SI indoor shades must have at least 1.5 wraps of fabric on the roller at the lower limit to maintain grip.

Troubleshooting Steps #

Step 1: Check Bracket Level

Use a bubble or digital level across bracket tops. Shim or remount if not perfectly level. Even small tilts cause telescoping.

Step 2: Look for Telescoping or Debris

Fully lower the shade. Watch fabric edges for tracking. Use a brush or vacuum to remove dust, bugs, or drywall debris.

Step 3: Inspect the Hem Bar

Confirm hem bar is straight and evenly weighted. A bent bar causes uneven tension that pulls fabric off-track.

Step 4: Use Tape to Recenter Fabric

• If fabric walks left, apply painter’s tape to the right side of the roller.

• If fabric walks right, tape the left side.

1. Remove the shade and lay it flat.

2. Unroll enough fabric to expose the roller.

3. Apply 1-3 layers of painter’s tape to correct the bias.

4. Re-roll, reinstall, and test.

Step 5: Check the Roller Tube

Sight along the roller to detect sag or bowing. Replace if visibly warped.

Step 6: Hem Bar Stuck in Cassette

Lightly Stuck Hem Bar – Applies to Nano V1 & V2 #

1. Use fingers to gently pull down on the hem bar.

2. While pulling, press the “down” button on the remote or wall switch.

3. This often releases the bar without tools.

Fully Stuck Hem Bar – Nano V1 Only #

1. Disconnect power.

2. Remove both end caps using a Phillips screwdriver.

3. Carefully slide the roller out while supporting the fabric roll.

4. Manually unroll the fabric to release pressure and free the hem bar.

5. Remove any debris, re-roll the fabric evenly, and reassemble.

Fully Stuck Hem Bar – Nano V2 #

1. Disconnect power.

2. If needed, unlock the brackets and remove the shade.

3. Loosen the end cap screws (reverse-threaded – turn clockwise).

4. Push up and rotate the front fascia forward to remove.

5. Manually rotate the roller to release the jammed fabric and hem bar.

6. Remove any debris, re-roll the fabric, and reinstall the fascia.

Step 7: Reset Motor Limits After Fixing Fabric

Once the fabric is repositioned, unjammed, or re-centered, always reprogram the motor’s travel limits. This ensures smooth stops and prevents over-travel or future rollover.

Tools You May Need #

• Bubble or digital level

• Painter’s tape or masking tape

• Screwdriver or Allen key

• Soft brush or vacuum

• Ladder or sturdy platform

What Not to Do #

• Do not operate the shade while unmounted.

• Do not remove all fabric from roller – keep 1.5 wraps minimum.

• Never force a stuck hem bar – you could damage the motor or tube.

Tips to Prevent Roll Over & Jams #

• Level and square the brackets during install.

• Inspect the tube and cassette before powering the shade.

• Never test a shade off the brackets.

• Recheck motor limits after any adjustment or service.
